Mengen number 5 Family Health Center - Rural Practice

Mengen Number Five Family Medicine Center is located in a small town called Mengen in the City of Bolu. Bolu is one of the most enchanting provinces of Turkey located approximately half-way between Istanbul and Ankara. Bolu is famous for its dense forests, fauna and modern hot spring facilities and lakes. The region is called also 'Lakes Region'. The history of the province dates back to Phrygians around 1200 BC. Then the Persians, Alexander the Great, Romans, Seljuk and Ottomans have left their traces.  During the Hellenistic period the area was called as Bithynia, then Romans called it Claudio Polis, and finally named as Bolu by Turks.


Mengen is a rural-town which belongs to Bolu City. Total population is approximately 13000. 5400 inhabitants live in the downtown and about 7500-8000 inhabitants live in 2 smallers towns and the villages. There are 56 villages in Mengen and those villages are mostly inside the forest. Mengen is also famous with the wildlife. Many tourists around Turkey and the world comes for camping, trekking and spending their holidays in these greenlands. Mengen has another way of fame around Turkey-wide; the most famous chefs around Turkey come out of this lovely green town which is called 'the land of cooks'.


Mengen Family Medicine Center has 6 clinics and 4 of them are integrated to the town-hospital. 4 of those clinics are in the hospital building and 2 of them are in 2 different towns which belongs to Mengen. Those towns are called Gökçesu and Pazarköy. Gökçesu is popular with coal mines. Downtown inhabitants of Gökçesu are miners and population of them are approximately 4000.

Pazarköy is a smaller town than Gökçesu and all of the inhabitants are villagers who mostly do livestock and bee farming. The population of this town is approxiamtely 1000.

In the central family medicine center, we have 4 clinics, 4 doctors, 5 nurses, injection/dressing room, vaccination room, gynocology room with ultrasound. As same as Turkey-wide each doctor is responsible for daily patients visits, newborn physical exams, performing national vaccination programme, performing prenatal observes of pregnants and postnatal observes of puerperants, preparing reporting papers of 156 different conditions, performing elderly cares and checking their risk scores with forms, chronic diseases management, performing check-up which is brand new for family physicians of  Turkey-Family Medicine System, performing obesity observation forms for all population that they responsible for.

One of the central clinics and two other smaller-town clinics have mobile health care service (home visits) to the villages. One of the central clinics has a duty of health-care of prisoners of Mengen Town Prison. Number 1,2,5,6 Family Medicine Clinics each have around 2500 registered patients, Gokçesu Family Medicine Center has around 4000 registered patients, Pazarköy Femily Medicine Center has around 1200 patients.


General work hours are between 8:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. 13:00 p.m. -17:00 p.m. every weekday but each doctor has his/her own schedule for home visits and flexiblehours.


As a result Mengen is a rural town. As an attendant you will have an opportunity to experience rural town work while you stay in a town in the middle of forests and having small walks inside the forests or trip to lake-side.
